Schools Close Because of Flu

Trinity Christian Academy, University School of Jackson, and Whitehall Prekindergarten Center will be closed through Friday to prevent the spread of the flu.

USJ Head of School Clay Lilienstern sent an email to parents Tuesday saying, “All activities on campus until next Monday, including daycare and athletics, are canceled. The Health Department director believes this action is in the best interests of the USJ community. We understand that this decision to close may impose a daycare hardship on some families, but we feel it is a needed step that we must implement immediately in order to minimize the spread of illness and to give students who are sick an opportunity to fully recover.”

According to the Center for Disease Control, flu season in the US is off to its earliest start in nearly a decade. Health officials also said the primary strain circulating tends to make people sicker than the other types.

UPDATE:
Local and area clinics and emergency rooms report an influx of patients showing up with flu-like symptoms recently. Some Jackson schools remain closed for the remainder of this week and even one city church cancelled its mid-week service because of the level of sickness in the area. Englewood Baptist Church on North Highland Ave. cancelled services last night as a precaution, according to church
leaders.
