5-22-8 Farm Bill Battle Royale
Terra Smith from the American Farm Bureau and Sallie James from the Cato Institute joined us for our Conference Call Battle Royale about the farm bill.

My standing ovation of the day goes to our President for vetoing the farm bill:

"For a year and a half, I have consistently asked that the Congress pass a good farm bill that I can sign. Regrettably, the Congress has failed to do so...It is inconsistent with our objectives in international trade negotiations, which include securing greater market access for American farmers and ranchers. It would needlessly expand the size and scope of government. Americans sent us to Washington to achieve results and be good stewards of their hard-earned taxpayer dollars. This bill violates that fundamental commitment" ...

Now build us a fence and you'll be back on my good side.
5-22-8 TOO EASY!!!
Every once in a while the Radio Gods float a big fat softball in front of the plate. I'm gonna let Bill Hobbs hit this one out of the park.

Part I
And then the cherry on top.

Peace out, Rob Briley. Your term as representative rivals only King WIlly in entertainment value.
5-20-8 Too Bad No One Reads The New Yorker...
...otherwise we'd be hearing more about this interview from Michelle Obama. Unbelievable.

"Obama begins with a broad assessment of life in America in 2008, and life is not good: we're a divided country, we're a country that is "just downright mean," we are "guided by fear," we're a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. "We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day," she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. "Folks are just jammed up, and it's gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I'm young. Forty-four!"

But don't question anything she says, she's only the potential first lady. Read the full article here. I never questioned Barack's lack of American flag pin, but I think this is a problem.

5-20-8 TN State Board of Cosmetology
No joke. It takes 1,500 Hours of training to get a license apply make-up. It takes 400 hours of training to become a police officer.
5-20-8 Andrew Bernstein Tuesday Morning
HERE is the book that "changed my mind" about Books From Birth: Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal by Ayn Rand. I would be totally willing to take $10 million of your dollars to send a brand new hardcover version of this book to every adult in Tennessee. (Ooooooorrrr You can buy this book yourself here for $3! What an investment!)

Andrew Bernstein, the author of The Capitalist Manifesto, will join us Tuesday at 7:30 to talk about Senator Lamar Alexander's New Manhattan Project and the role of government in looking for alternative energies. You DON'T want to miss this!
5-19-8 Keep In Mind When At The Pump
Gas taxes by state (Tennessee 39.8 cents, California 63.9). And this doesn't include the effect that the EPA and government regulations have on the price of gas BEFORE the tax. The government needs to get out of the way to increase supply, not get more involved in an effort to decrease demand.

(Another shoutout to Carpe Diem)
5-15-8 US Senator Week Continues...
...with Senator Lamar Alexander. The focus was on Alexander's "New Manhattan Project for Clean Energy Indepenence." Here is the press release, and here is the Jackson Sun's editorial.

(I wore my jeans and red flannel shirt in honor of Senator Alexander's appearance on the show, with my best James Dean)

The entire interview is at the bottom of the page (Flash 9 required, it's FREE!)
US Senator Week on The Mike Slater Show
On Wednesday US Senator Bob Corker will be taking your calls. And if we just had one senator it wouldn't be Senator WEEK, it would just be Senator Day, so on Thursday, we'll be joined by US Senator Lamar Alexander.

Both will be with us at 7:30, 423-0139 is the number, and Slater@wtjs.com is the E-mail to ask your Senators a question. Where else on your radio dial can you talk with both of your US Senators?

5-13-8 The Govanah!
Here's his speech and briefing.

5-7-8 I HATE Capitalism
If you buy a new General Motors car, you get $2.99 gas for three years! No matter what the price of gas, GM will give you a card, and they'll pay anything over $2.99. How cool is that?

Want free money? Kroger will GIVE YOU $120 for doing nothing. Walk into Kroger with $1,200, and they'll give you 4 gift cards worth $330 each. That's a FREE $120 bucks. No string attached, except you have to use it at Kroger, but...that's the only grocery store in town. Take the edge off of the rising price of food.  And it works for gas, too.

Want cheap prescriptions? There's no evil Sith Lord I hate more than Wal-Mart, unless you want to, well, live. They started with $4 prescriptions for a 30-day supply (Which has already saved Americans over a BILLION dollars in just over a year), now they're expanding to $10 prescriptions for a 90-day supply. So after Wal-Mart saved you hundreds of dollars on a prescription, now they're chopping $2 more off. And in the name of COMPETITION, Target and Kroger will offer $10 prescriptions as well.
Cinco de Mayo - Whoaaaaaaaaa, what!
A "Reasonable Profits Board"?!? This is the most fascist proposal I've ever heard from a representative IN THIS COUNTRY! This guy wants to set up a Reasonable Profits Board to take the money from the evil Lord Sith oil companies. "Kanjorski said his legislation will encourage oil companies to lower prices to prevent them from receiving higher tax rates." (?)

In other news, Exxon Mobil forked over a RECORD in taxes paid to the government. $10.9 Billion in profits, $29.3 Billion in taxes paid. I've said it before, "THANK GOD FOR EXXON MOBIL!" They pay almost $3 in taxes for every $1 in profit, that's $1,200 EVERY SECOND!

A UH-60 Black Hawk Helicopter costs $4.9 million to make. Exxon Mobil pays for that helicopter in 65 minutes. AND they supply the fuel to make it fly. I HATE Exxon Mobil.

NOTE: Carpe Diem is the best blog I've ever read.
5-1-8 This Is So Annoying
How did this happen. Weirdo magician Criss Angel with his girlfriend MISS NEVADA! When's the last time Angel took a shower?
4-28-8 Follow-Up On Friday's Debate
First of all, the book that a SlaterRaider recommended on the air this morning is "A Child Called 'It'" by David Pelzer.

This morning I read the best worded argument for abortions, and no matter what side of the debate you're on with this issue, it's important to take in and try to understand both sides. One of two things can happen: either you change your mind, or you strengthen your opinion. Both are good things. Here is Ayn Rand:

"The question of abortion involves much more than the termination of a pregnancy: it is a question of the entire life of the parents. As I have said before, parenthood is an enormous responsibility; it is an impossible responsibility for young people who are ambitious and struggling, but poor; particularly if they are intelligent and conscientious enough not to abandon their child on a doorstep nor to surrender it to adoption. For such young people, pregnancy is a death sentence: parenthood would force them to give up their future, and condemn them to a life of hopeless drudgery, of slavery to a child’s physical and financial needs. The situation of an unwed mother, abandoned by her lover, is even worse. I cannot quite imagine the state of mind of a person who would wish to condemn a fellow human being to such a horror."

Just throwing it out there. I've never heard this argument before. Use it to either change your opinion or strengthen it. That's why we're all here.
4-28-8 She's 15 (The one on the right)
I'm rooting for Mylie. I'm rooting for her. I want her to succeed and not dance like a stripper and not get pregnant before she's 18  (I just covered the entire Britney Spears family). My take: I'm not worried that these pictures are going to hurt your kids. The pics are in Vanity Fair, and I don't know many 9 year old girls who have a subscription to Vanity Fair. I'm more disgusted that all the ADULTS in the room, from her managers to image consultants to make-up artists, hair, stylists, guy who separated the yellow M&Ms from the bowl, to the photographer to the guy who was holding the light, how none of them said, "Ummm, guys, she's 15. Let's show a tank-top strap or something." There is a whole chain of command of adults that failed her. That's a problem.
